The Triton Owners'
Club (A.C.T.) Inc.
is a club for all owners of Triton woodworking products.

Club Happenings

This page represents a record of what activities or 'happenings' the club undertakes. Its purpose is two fold. The first is to serve as a reminder to members about what has and is about to happen (always at the top). It's second is to form a recent history which members, and potential members, can see what the club does.

Typically, each month we will send all members an e-mail of what the club has just completed or participated in and what we are about to do.

February 2012

Welcome to a new club year.

We currently have 67 financial members. If by some slim chance you have fallen into the unfinancial category, our treasurer Carolan Marstin will be delighted to hear from you, either at the meeting or via email treasurer@tocact.org.au,

Next Meeting

This will be this Wednesday at 7pm. Brian Copeland will run a broad presentation on setting up and adjusting Triton workcentres and router equipment, and there will be opportunity to discuss both series 2000 and Mark 3 workcentres. (We are interested in knowing how many members are still using Mark 3 equipment, so that we can tailor future presentations appropriately.)

A message from our toy co-ordinator, Dave Veness:

Thanks to all who supplied toys for our Christmas distribution, we ended up with approximately 200 toys, which were very warmly welcomed by the organisation that distributes them to needy children. A special thanks goes to Bruce McKenzie, who made over half the toys.We are always interested in gaining new toy makers & any members interested in finding out what is involved could contact Dave Veness at daveven@netspeed.com.au . Dave will unveil this year's ideas for toymaking on Wednesday.

I hope to see you on Wednesday
regards

October 2011

1. Notice is hereby given that the Triton Owners' Club (ACT) Incorporated will hold its Annual General Meeting at 7:00 pm on Wednesday October 5, 2011 in Building G at the Bruce  Campus of the Canberra Institute of Technology.

  •  Matters Arising - President
  •  Annual Report - President
  •  Financial Report - Treasurer
  •  Election of Office Bearers - President
  •  Other Business - President
  •  Close - President

The Minutes from the last AGM are attached (please bring a copy with you if you are attending). You will need to be a financial member in order to vote - if you have forgotten to renew your membership our Treasurer would be delighted to hear from you.

If you have found the Club to be useful to you over the last year then please show your support by turning up - the meeting should finish by 8pm.

2. Last Monthly meeting: A well attended meeting with presentations by Chris Mobbs and Bob Hall - remember that we are interested in more show and tell presentations by members.

3. A gentle reminder to all current toy makers and prospective toy makers (where are you? ) that there is only 2 months left before our toys are to be collected for the Christmas distribution. This year it would be pleasing if we could better last year's total of 300. The question is sometimes asked as to what types of toys are needed, so here are some suggestions: wheeled cars, trucks etc, pull along toys, hobby horses, dolls cots, jewellery boxes or try "Googling" wooden toys for ideas (and plans).Remember we still have some funds left from our donation from Bunnings, so if you are after some materials for toy making, contact Barry Cook, our Bunnings co-ordinator, on 6258 4648.If you are making toys for this purpose please make sure that our co-ordinator, Dave Veness, knows about you.

4. A further reminder that our library is available for members to borrow from. We continue to purchase Australian Woodsmith and Australian Woodworker, and each month our Librarian, Brian Copeland indexes their contents and makes them available on our website. You can search these index pages with your browser. There are also indexes for a wide variety of project plans that you might find useful. Brian also has a recently received catalogue of router bits from Sydney supplier McJings.

Hope to see you next Wednesday

September 2011

1. Next Monthly meeting: Our next monthly meeting will be held at the Bruce CIT (see here for location) at 7pm on Wednesday 7th September. The main event will be a presentation by our Secretary, Chris Mobbs, of the process of making a recent project, followed by a demo of simple patternmaking on the router, with members welcome to try their hand and take something useful home.

2. We are interested in other 'show and tell' sessions from any members at future meetings. You can take as short or as long as you wish - but sharing can only help others in their woodworking journey. Please let me know if you are prepared to contribute. Alternatively, if you have any presentation topics to suggest, or any questions you would like addressed, then also let me know and we'll get it scheduled.

3. Last Monthly meeting: A well attended meeting with a presentation by professional Garry McLaughlin on furniture restoration - some surprises came to light. Some pictures are on our Blog.

4. Our stall at the Malkara Model Exhibition was very well attended by visitors, and we hope to see some new or returning members as a result of some of the enquiries.

5. Any members who may be interested in saving postage by joining a bulk exercise in obtaining Triton spare parts from the UK are invited to contact Chris Mobbs at email secretary@tocact.org.au or at the meeting.

6. Don't forget that if you haven't renewed your annual membership already this is the time to do it - our Treasurer awaits your input.

7. Some people have experienced problems with their MOF001 router, with the plastic gear of the micro height adjuster stripping. These are now made of steel, and there is a spare going for $15 if you need one. Contact the Secretary Chris Mobbs for details. Note that this part, TRA378, will not fit the larger TRA001 router.

8. Don't forget the Working with Wood show at EPIC this coming weekend.

Hope to see you at our next meeting.

1. Next Monthly meeting: Our next monthly meeting will be held at the Bruce  CIT  (see here for location) at 7pm on Wednesday 4th  May. This meeting is all about jigs. We will start with a talk from prolific jig maker Phil Coleman
followed by members show and tell. So please bring along that jig you made to make your life easier and safer.

2. Last Monthly meeting: Our March meeting was well attended, where Dave Veness along with other helpers set up various workstations where people used jigs to make the parts that make up Dave's toy planes. Anthony F. was seen learning how to perform climb cuts on the router table. And for the first time in a number of months John G. attended the meeting along with his better half Heather.

3. Our best wishes goes out to our Vice President, Gavin, who suffered a heart attack late last month. We will him well in his recovery.

March 2011

1. Next Monthly meeting: Our next monthly meeting will be held at the Bruce CIT (see here for location) at 7pm on Wednesday 6th April. Following on from Dave Veness's demonstration last meeting, our April meeting will be a 'hands on' event giving those who wish to the opportunity to manufacture several small pieces for a toy aeroplane. It will provide an experience to work with small pieces on both the Workcentre and Router Table using the simple jigs demonstrated last time, under supervision..(We will do a before and after count of fingers!).

If you wish to participate it would be a good idea to bring your own eye and ear protection (earplugs or muffs), as two Workcentres operating together are fairly noisy.

Additionally Mike Cammel will return with his 21st key templates. If you wish to make some keys, please bring timber sized 520 x 119 mm. The board should be between 7 to 10mm thick maximum.

2. Last Monthly meeting: Our March meeting was well attended, focussing on toymaking and presentation key makingdemonstrations. Some pictures from the evening appear on our Blog.

3. Our blog: Don't forget we are interested in receiving your contributions to our Blog - have you made something recently that others might like to see? Then why not share your achievement with other members.

4. Offcuts sale: The timber offcut sale at Scott Mitchell's Fyshwick workshop was well attended on 12 March, and will be repeated on 9 April if you missed it. You should have received a separate email advice of this.

Hope to see you at our next meeting

Feb 2011

1. Next Monthly meeting: Our next monthly meeting will be held at the Bruce CIT (see here for location) at 7pm on Wednesday 2nd March. We plan two demonstration events. The first will be a demonstration by Dave Veness on toy making.  He will cover how to go about starting, tools required, safety aspects and the use of jigs. He will finish by demonstrating the making of a toy aeroplane using simple jigs. The second part of the evening will be presented by Mike Cammell, showing
how to use the router table to make a wooden key suitable for a 21st birthday presentation gift.

2. Last Monthly meeting: Our February meeting was well attended. Brian Copeland demonstrated how to use a Triton router in overhead mode in either the Workcentre 2000 or the Triton router table. The hot evening finished quite dramatically with the arrival of a storm to cool things down.

3. Our blog: Don't forget we are interested in receiving contributions to our new Blog - have you made something recently that others might like to see? Then why not share your achievement with other members.

4. Carbatec Triton sale: The Carbatec sale of selected Triton equipment continues until 28 February, or until stock is sold. See their site for details. Note that the new compact router is on sale. Sadly the Canberra store has closed, so it's Sydney or online for buying.

5. Triton spares: People are still experiencing difficulty in obtaining spares through Carbatec. If you need a hard to get spare part, Dennis Leverett in the UK reports:

I have lots of spares for Triton that are not on the Web Site yet. These include many parts that are not available anywhere else especially for obsolete products. If you need something ask because I may just have it and when they are gone that's it, no more. I also have stocks of original Triton saw blades and Router Cutters which are top quality and not on the web site yet.

Dennis has many customers in Australia, and can be contacted via www.tritontools.uk.com or by email at dennis@tritonwoodworking.co.uk

Hope to see you at our next meeting

Jan 2011

1. Next Monthly meeting: Our monthly meetings will resume at the Bruce CIT (see here for location) at 7pm on Wednesday 2nd February. This will be a short meeting, only 1 hour, and we plan to demonstrate the use of the router, both overhead routing and in the Triton router table. If you are a novice you will certainly pick up some tips, while if you are an experienced router user you can contribute to the discussion and so assist others. This could save your fingers!

2. Toymaking: Last year, 3 ACT woodworking clubs (Woodworker's Guild, Majura Men's Shed & Ourselves ) made and donated over 1100 toys to needy children at Christmas - see here for an article republished from the Chronicle. We are hoping to better that this year, and are organising some events to facilitate here toy making:

* Several members have indicated an interest in learning about toymaking & some of our experienced toymakers have offered to act as "mentors". This could be by way of working together at a toymakers workshop or by making or finishing (eg sanding,  painting, staining) some toy components in your own workshop. If you are interested in getting involved in toymaking, please contact Dave Veness on 6241 5925 .
* If you are an experienced woodworker interested in getting into our gift toy making this year, Dave would also like to hear from you so that he can co-ordinate the program.
* If you are an experienced toymaker and would be prepared to open your successful design secrets to others, even if you don't have the time to make them yourself, then again, Dave's your man. He is keen to pick up new ideas. He would particularly welcome designs for toys that are attractive for girls.
* We will be demonstrating aspects of toymaking at our March meeting, and will be offering a 'hands on' at our April meeting - stay tuned. This is for anyone, not just those making toys in our gift program.

3. Library and equipment: Don't forget that the club has a Library of materials, and that we also have equipment for hire at very modest rates. See here for details.

4. Survey responses: Our recent survey has given us some good clues as to where to direct our presentations this year. Thanks to those who responded. (If the dog ate yours feel free to drop us a line any time if you have any bright ideas - my email address is below)

5. Annual woodworking competition: We had 21 entries in our annual woodworking competition, which was judged at  our December meeting. See here for some pictures. The winners were:

* General Woodwork - Barry Cook
* Toys - Bruce McKenzie
* Workshop - Hugh Hutchinson

Congratulations to our winners. if you think you can match or outdo these, why not start planning for an entry this year?

6. Carbatec Triton sale: Carbatec Sydney is having a sale of Triton equipment until 28 February, or until stock is sold. See their site details.

Hope to see you at our next meeting
